This is a beautiful 1997 Catalina 36MKII Wing Keel. Designed as a comfortable cruiser, there is room to make extended passages comfortably or to spend summers dockside. This boat has been continuously upgraded by experienced owners and is ready for many more years of sailing and adventures. The sellers report a long list of upgrades including newer furling headsail and newer running rigging standing rigging inspected in 2018. Also added recently is a new West Marine 310 RIB with 6hp Yamaha 4 stroke, dinghy davits, 2 “D” batteries, a newer head and more. Look over the extensive inventory list in the photos and you will see only one thing missing - you.
The boat is truly turn-key and ready to go. As noted, there is new running rigging in 2018/2019 and lines lead to the cockpit. Self-tailing primary winches and single line reefing from the cockpit. The binnacle features a folding wheel, compass, plotter with radar, throttle, and shifter. There are also full cockpit cushions in good condition and a collapsible cockpit table. The entire cockpit can be covered with a Sunbrella “bubble”. Not only does this essentially offer you another room onboard when dockside or on the hook, but it also gives wonderful protection from the sun and weather when underway. Additionally this entire area could be heated with a “Mr Heater” type propane heater to extend your seasons earlier and later. Down below is in equally nice condition. All cushions and surfaces are in good repair and all systems are said to be in good working order. There is a large forward stateroom with a V-berth and ample storage. A full enclosed head is aft to port with a hanging locker opposite.
Equipment: Further aft is a large convertible dinette to port with a smaller convertible table and upholstered seats opposite. There is a fully equipped galley to port and a navigation station opposite at the rear of the main cabin. The galley features a double sink, a gimballed three-burner stove with oven, large icebox with generous counter and storage space. There is also a good-sized private aft cabin separated by a door behind the nav station. This area features a large berth, ample opening hatches, and good storage space. The sale includes everything you need to head out today - dinghy with outboard and davits, a portable 2000 watt generator, full Sunbrella “bubble”, Force 10 propane heater and more. This absolutely does not appear to be a 24-year-old boat. Call me today with any questions or to make this wonderful boat the base for your new adventures. Dinghy included 10’ 2” inflatable Dinghy 2018.
INFORMATION ON CONDITION The boat appears to be in great condition both cosmetically and mechanically. All surfaces and materials onboard are in good condition and there is no evidence of stains or unwanted odors. All systems are reported to be in good working order. The boat has been yard maintained with fresh wax and ablative paint applied annually. The boat is fully commissioned, launched, and ready to go immediately. “The target market for the 36 is couples and families who primarily weekend and vacation cruise but may be planning some extended cruising, They want a boat that is comfortable, offers reasonable performance, and is stable and predicable to handle. The boat suits their budget, and they can add gear for bluewater cruising. Gerry Douglas for Practical Sailor.Comes with winter cover and structure.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Same hull and rig as the earlier version introduced in 1982 but with a larger cockpit and updated deck and interior. (Replaced with the CATALINA 375 in 2008)
Also available with a shallower draft wing keel and tall rig.
Wing keel draft: 4.52’/1.38m.
Dimensions for tall rig:
I: 46.75’/14.25m
J: 14.33’/4.37m
P: 41.0’/12.5m
E: 13.0’/3.96m
