The Tanzer 26 is a well-built, stable, and easily sailed pocket cruiser/racer, supported by a large and active owners group. Just search “Tanzer 26” to learn more.
I purchased this boat in 2012 from a close friend who had owned it since 1996. Since then, Ive sailed it from Hyde Park, NY, down the Hudson River, and relocated it to Oakdale, where its been berthed for the past 12-13 seasons. During that time, we’ve enjoyed countless sunset cruises on the Great South Bay, with overnight stays at Fire Island’s National Seashore.
Over the years, Ive made several upgrades, including a barrier-coated bottom, a GPS, depth finder, replaced tiller to new design, a four-stroke Yamaha outboard, a new mainsail last year, and both headsails (110 & 150) replaced in the past seven years. Boat has fresh water at the galley, 30 amp shore power, dual batteries, Cushions updated in 2012. Also has boat stands included.
So why am I selling? With my kids now in college, I can no longer justify the yearly expenses given how little we use it. After nearly 30 years of sailing, and owning this beauty for 12 of them, its time for her to find a new owner. If youre looking for a boat to enjoy stunning sunset cruises with friends and family or simply to sail, this is a perfect opportunity.
Equipment: Some data from the Tanzer 26 site:
The Tanzer 26 Dimensions: L.O.A.: 26’4” (8.03 m) L.W.L.: 22’6” (6.86 m) Beam: 8’8” (2.64 m) Draft: 3’10” (1.17 m) Vertical clearance: 33’ (10.06 m) Headroom: 5’11” (1.80 m) Displacement: 4,350 lbs. (1975 kg.) Ballast: 1,950 lbs. (885 kg.)
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Most 26s were outboard-powered, though an inboard Yanmar diesel was an option.
