Seller's Description

Catalina 22, 1975 100% sailing & race ready, but also a project boat. It’s fast and I have the trophies to prove it. Any repair work needed is mostly cosmetic, and can certainly wait a few years or more. To be clear, you are getting an old boat that looks rough, but also a cover, a great trailer, fully working motor, and sails in good shape, as well. The reason for selling is I am upgrading to a live-aboard boat. You will basically be taking over the restoration project I started, but can also sail the boat as is for many years before needing to do any repairs. Great for a DIY’er but could also be restored professionally if you have the money or want to save for that in the future. The boat and motor have clean titles, but the trailer has no title (a title can be acquired for it through the DPS) 100% sailing & race ready Good main, jib, and genoa (including whisker pole), and these are all labelled with the sail # The previous owner won these in a race so they are not that old. Spinnaker tracks with blocks, but no spinnaker or spinnaker pole New Boat cover Trailer has been overhauled with new bunks for the boat to rest on, new wheels, bearings, wiring, etc. Mostly new running rigging, including new mainsheet system and all new sheets for jib (two sizes) Spare mast Motor is a Mercury 4hp 2-stroke. It has been fully serviced and the internal fuel tank has been removed and its been modified to use an external fuel tank connected via hose. Wood pieces have been restored, including tiller and interior pieces (excluding structural non-removal pieces) Interior cushions & covers all thoroughly cleaned (2 have broken zippers) Anchor and rode Navigation lights rewired, but not completely reconnected or tested. Lots of stuff will be included, such as cowlings and hoses to vent the interior compartment for the fuel tank, a tiller-stay autopilot type system, a new bow-eye replacement kit, as well as some electronics, life jackets, extra lines, hardware, a large & small battery, etc. Repaired bow and installed new bow pulpit The rest of the deck needs some work, quite a bit to be looking new again. However, there are no major issues, soft spots, or delamination. It is mostly cosmetic. The bottom of the hull is in great shape and smooth, but the sides could use new paint.. eventually

Calculations

Hull Speed
7.6 kn
Classic: 5.89 kn

Hull Speed

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Formula

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

7.58 knots
Classic formula: 5.89 knots
Sail Area/Displacement
17.9
16-20: good performance

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Formula

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3

  • SA: Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D: Displacement in pounds.
17.86
<16: under powered
16-20: good performance
>20: high performance
Ballast/Displacement
32.2
<40: less stiff, less powerful

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Formula

Ballast / Displacement * 100

32.15
<40: less stiff, less powerful
>40: stiffer, more powerful
Displacement/Length
154.0
100-200: light

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Formula

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
153.99
<100: ultralight
100-200: light
200-300: moderate
300-400: heavy
>400: very heavy
Comfort Ratio
12.7
<20: lightweight racing boat

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Formula

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
12.67
<20: lightweight racing boat
20-30: coastal cruiser
30-40: moderate bluewater cruising boat
40-50: heavy bluewater boat
>50: extremely heavy bluewater boat
Capsize Screening
2.3
>2.0: better suited for coastal cruising

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Formula

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
2.27
<2: better suited for ocean passages
>2: better suited for coastal cruising

Notes

The CATALINA 22 is one of the most popular sailboats ever in anything close to this size,. 15,000 boats sold (2009)
It has been built in different plants around the world..(Known in Australia as the BOOMAROO 22.)
(A fixed keel version introduced in the early 1970’s)

A ‘New Design’ was introduced in 1986 (featuring an opt. winged keel), and MARK II in 1995.

The CATALINA 22 SPORT was released in 2003. (Originally called the CAPRI 22 swing keel.)
From a new “fairer” mold though the hull design is the same as the original CATALINA 22.
Thanks to former Catalina dealer Joe Rose and a number of others for providing additional information.
