General condition and any additional information
The boat has been used and enjoyed by the owner for several seasons. It is an easy boat to handle, an ideal size for a couple, and spacious enough for small family to enjoy some quality time on the water. Time has come for the owner to sell due to age and health reasons.
An 8 inflatable dinghy (2017) and a 2.3 hp outboard (2015) are not included in boat price, but are available for a separate sale to prospective buyers.
Standard features
This boat is the popular tall rig / shoal draft wing keel which is great for both daysailing and cruising. Its draft is only 3-10 and displaces 10.300 lbs. with 4300 lbs. of ballast. With almost an 11 beam, it is very roomy for a 30 sailboat.
It has the standard Catalina 30 cabin arrangement with a v-berth and filler custion to form a large double berth forward with shelf storage and a custom built cabinet. Aft to port is the head compartment with vanity, stainless steel sink, pull-out shower faucet, mirrored storage cabinet, bulkhead mounted shelf / mirror and the head. Starboard side has has a large cabinet with drawers, a hanging locker and counter top. In the saloon, a roomy dinette has U-shaped sitting on the port side and a settee on the starboard side. Both sides have storage areas behind the cushions and some under one seat. The table top sets down to form a double berth. The galley has a double sink, range/oven and ice box which can be chilled with an Adler- Barbour 12V cold machine. Lots of shelf and drawer storage in the galley. Starboard aft is the navigation desk, electrical panel and a double quarter berth.
It has CD sails (2002) including full batton mainsail, 135% genoa on manual Harken Series 1-338 roller furler, cruising spinnaker, manual boom vang, backstay tension adjuster, genoa tracks with cars, sail cover, 2 Lewmar #40 two speed self tailing winches on cockpit coaming, 1 Lewmar #16 single speed self tailing winch on cabin roof, and 1 Lewmar #7 single speed winch on cabin roof, floatable winch handles, Danforth 1800 two-fluke anchor with 6 foot galvanized chain and 150 foot 5/8 stranded nylon rode, Anchor Buddy lead kedge to to improve anchor holding capability, bow locker for anchor and rode, sealed stowage locker in lazarette for propane tank, teak hatch boards with stowage bag.
There is a Ritchie Poweredamp compass dome on Edson steering pedestal, Standard Horizon VHF with stern mounted antenna, Autohelm radar, Autohelm autopilot, Datamarine S200DL depthsounder, Datamarine wind velocity / direction (not currently working properly), Garmin Portable GPS 478 with helm mount, AM-FM radio with aux. input in cabin
Extra gear included
It comes with all the basic equipment for comfortable cruising, and It is well outfitted with galley equipment.
It has 2 house batteries / 1 starting battery, PowerFilm solar charger / charger controller for house batteries, Hart Freedom 10 inverter charger, 110V shore power cord / adapters, gas grill with stern rail mount, Wilcox Crittenden Headmate head, Shurflo accumulator in pressurized water system, spare 5 gallon diesel fuel container, emergency tiller, dock lines, PFDs, 3 portable fire extinguishers, ships bell and clock, cockpit table, helm cover, cockpit cushions and MOB lifesling.
Improvements to the hull, deck, rigging, engine, or interior
Owner has strived to keep this boat in great condition since purchasing in 2007. Upgrades and maintenance items have been accomplished as needed over the years. Winter storage and major maintenance items have been accomplished by Mystic Shipyard and maintenance records are available. Most recently all the standing rigging, the sea water heat exchanger, the domestic hot water heater, and all coolant hoses were replaced. A detailed list of maintenance items over the years will be provided on request
A custom built bimini was added in 2012 to provide a great deal of shade while sailing. A bimini to dodger connector expands the shade and provides rain protection if needed while relaxing in the cockpit.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
With more than 6000 sold, the Catalina 30 is one of the most successful production sailing yachts in history.
During the long production run of this basic model there were a great number of variations with standard and tall rig configurations, each with a bowsprit option, and also including shoal, wing and deep fin keels.
A MK II version began around hull# 3300 (1986).(T-shaped cockpit is the most notable change)
The Mark III (1994) (walk-thru transom with boarding/swim platform standard though offered as an option on earlier models.)
Aux. power:
The early Yanmar, Universal 5411 and Atomic-4 engines were phased out in favor of the 3-cylinder Universal M-25 diesels during the middle 80s.
