Pictures speak lauder than words, she is a NW classic famous “Blue” with beautiful lines. Bruce Kirby, world’s best selling sailboat (Laser) designer designed SJ 30 specially for Puget Sound’s light winds. Easy to sail, fast and perfect for a sailor who wants to move up.
TRADE : I would like to trade her for a 1) 24’ 2) less than 2.000 lb. 3)fiberglas 4) centerboat daysailor on a 5) GOOD conditioned galvanized trailer. No outboard OK but she must have 6) multiple racing sails.. I’ve been sailing almost 60 years ; not interested in any other kind of boats that do not match all of my points above..
OBO : lf you don’t have a boat l am looking for, make me a reasonable offer. Asking price is AS lS, unless you have seen her, l am not accepting any offer. I am available to show you the boat any weekend afternoon. If you would like to inspect her TEXT me ( no calls or voice mails please ) to schedule a viewing.
You will need to wear a mask (no kerchiefs) and gloves; social distancing a must. Only serious reliable buyers need apply.
Equipment: The hull from the gunnel down has been epoxied and awl grip painted (10 K job) so, you you aren’t going to have blisters lifetime. All through holes are fitted with the highest quality stainless ball valves. She has double sloth headstay, all line handling is from the cockpit. Volvo diesel, foldable max prop, manuals, 4 sails, 9 winches, diesel heater, VHF, depth finder, auto pilot, 2 batteries, battery charger, large ice box, brand new origo stove, 2 barbecues, solar powered vantilator, computerized and manual bilge pumps, GPS, compass, binaculars, TV with dvd player, swim ladder, bosuns chair, mainsail cover, life jackets, new fenders and tons of boating stuff..
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Based on an IOR 1/2 ton prototype.
A more racing oriented version (with a shorter coach roof and longer cockpit, deeper keel etc.) was also available. How many of these were built in unknown.
Available with the deeper keel: 6.0’/1.83m
Tall rig:
I: 39.5’/12.04m
J: 12.5’/3.81m
P: 35.0’/10.67m
E: 9.5’/2.90m
