Standard features

Ma Makani is a beautiful and well cared for 2001 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 43 Deck Salon with 2 cabins/2 heads customized to meet extended coastal cruising and comfortable live-aboard experiences. Eight 30” by 14” fixed ports in the main cabin and galley maximizes interior head room (6’-4”) and space throughout, resulting in an open, airy feeling with excellent visibility of the environs. The raised, U-shaped upholstered settee comfortably seats 5 for meals, has a 24” HDTV, a 20” x 20” clear deck hatch with powered intake/exhaust vent, 2 gimbled circulation fans, various storage cabinets and can convert to a queen berth. Opposite is a navigation station with large chart table and storage below, 2 upholstered seats (great for meals, too) and includes electronics to plan and keep track of your voyage. L-shaped galley is equipped with forward-facing double sink, 4-burner propane stove with oven, microwave, separate refrigerator and freezer, powered intake/exhaust vent, multiple cabinets and in-floor storage. Aft cabin stateroom has an oversized queen island berth, 2 gimbled circulation fans, 21” HDTV, large clothes lockers and additional storage compartments on each side. Aft head is accessed from both the stateroom and main cabin and has a macerator toilet, stainless-steel sink, 3 storage cabinets (one mirrored), 6’-7” headroom and separate enclosed shower. Forward cabin has a 78” long V-berth with full-width storage shelf above, numerous drawers and cabinets, desk and a tall hanging locker. Adjacent forward head has a sink, shower and storage cabinets; its toilet has been replaced with an 8-lb clothes washer for live-aboard convenience (parts provided to revert to toilet). The spacious aft cockpit/helm has 6’-4” headroom, pedestal wheel steering, a full complement of electronics and controls, a large central folding table and full width swim step for either dock or water entry/exit. The cockpit can be completely enclosed by a dodger, Bimini top and removable side and aft panels. Ma Makani has spent 95% of the past 7 years in Oregon, berthed or sailed in non-freezing freshwater of the Columbia River. This has limited the UV and saltwater impact on this sailboat. • Raymarine system rewired, and backbone networks updated (2019) • Raymarine 18” Digital Radome on mast • Raymarine 9” C95 MultiFunctionDisplay w/ GPS at helm • Raymarine Class B AIS w/ dedicated GPS at Nav station • Raymarine Autopilot—300 course computer, fluxgate compass, type 25 linear drive; ST6000 control at Helm and ST6000R remote at Nav station • Raymarine ST60 Wind for wind point and velocity • Raymarine i40 Wind repeater at Nav station • Raymarine ST60 TriData (hull speed/water temperature/water depth) at helm • Standard Horizon GX2000 VHF w/ DSC at Nav station (2020); RAM3 Remote Station Microphone (2020) at helm • Raymarine 125 GPS for DSC at pushpit • Plastimo Horizon 350 Compass at helm

Calculations

Hull Speed
10.1 kn
Classic: 8.21 kn

Hull Speed

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Formula

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

10.09 knots
Classic formula: 8.21 knots
Sail Area/Displacement
16.1
16-20: good performance

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Formula

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3

  • SA: Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D: Displacement in pounds.
16.12
<16: under powered
16-20: good performance
>20: high performance
Ballast/Displacement
30.9
<40: less stiff, less powerful

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Formula

Ballast / Displacement * 100

30.94
<40: less stiff, less powerful
>40: stiffer, more powerful
Displacement/Length
178.2
100-200: light

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Formula

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
178.24
<100: ultralight
100-200: light
200-300: moderate
300-400: heavy
>400: very heavy
Comfort Ratio
25.3
20-30: coastal cruiser

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Formula

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
25.32
<20: lightweight racing boat
20-30: coastal cruiser
30-40: moderate bluewater cruising boat
40-50: heavy bluewater boat
>50: extremely heavy bluewater boat
Capsize Screening
2.0
<2.0: better suited for ocean passages

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Formula

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
1.99
<2: better suited for ocean passages
>2: better suited for coastal cruising

Notes

Shallow draft: 1.6m/5.25’.
