Escape Winter aboard your Classic Center Cockpit Sloop sailboat. The Nantucket Island NI33 and NI38 were designed by Ausie, Peter Cole, designer of Australian contenders for The America’s Cup race. Built in Taiwan by HoHsing Shipyards, to a very high standard of FRP construction. Excellent joinery skills and cabinetry craftsmanship are evident throughout the Teak interior. Form follows function in the layout below, the Flush Deck Design provides excellent headroom, leaving one with a feeling that your on a larger monohull. The Aft Masters Stateroom provides a level of luxury not normally found is a vessel this size. There is a special feel to the Nantucket Island Yacht, I can only describe it as a balance, a harmonious feeling. The layout of this Flush Deck/Center Cockpit/Aft Cabin Bluewater Cruiser just seems to flow. This Sloop has a very attractive design and is one of the finest looking sailboats in the anchorage. This sailboat does not close in on you during long passages, it seems to flow seamlessly with the wind and water. Some call this, “Feng shui”, An ancient art and science that was formalized over 3,000 years ago in China. In literal translation feng means “wind” and shui means “water.” In Chinese culture, wind and water are associated with good health, thus good feng shui came to mean good fortune. Conversely, bad feng shui means bad luck or misfortune, which is not good “Juju” at sea.

Available in two versions, the NI38 and NI33, the Nantucket Island Yacht is a Compact Bluewater Cruiser with an amazing layout which provides a very high level of functionality and comfort in 33’. This well founded cruiser will take you anywhere in style and safety. The encapsulated keel will not come off in a grounding, or a storm. Even if holed, it is sealed off from the rest of the bilge. The Flush deck provides an uncluttered space for single handed cruising as well as a great place to entertain, in port. Approximately 50 or so NI33’s were built in Taiwan, and Down Under. These classic yachts are not well known, because of they are rather scarce, not because of their performance under sail, offshore, or Island Hoping. The 5.5’ draft is great in skinny waters, yet the heavy ballast ratio, keeps it stiff in a blow. The Modified Full Keel, provides good stability with a lower drag ratio, for faster passages. The PERF rating is decent for Regattas.

The NI38 is even more rare, as far as we know, only 5 were built, all in Taiwan, before Polyester resin prices went through the roof, causing many FRP Shipyards to close their doors. SV PaPa is probably one of the finest Nantucket Island 38’s available, anywhere. Ordered new in 1985 and delivered to Lake Michigan, this NI38 was a stout contender in the Chicago Mac Race.

Location and Accommodations-

SV PaPa is located in a private 8 slip marina, on a canal, across from a park with a Boardwalk that wraps the park and allows you to sit on the bank of the St Lucie River and watch some magnificent sunsets at the famous Sunset Bay in Florida’s Treasure Coast. The sounds of laughter and children playing fills the air here. This is where rich Northerners would visit in the Roaring 20’s, charter a captain with a boat to take them out to catch a Swordfish. The historic France Hotel and Casino provides the setting, quaint and relaxing, this is a special place to unwind a little. The residents enjoy sitting at the patio next to the docks, talking to the sailors. Half the slips belong to locals who live nearby in this exclusive waterfront neighborhood, the other half are Northerners, like myself. In the past 100 or so years The France has seen its fair share of severe tropical storms and hurricanes, but still stands tall and proud. Located off the St Lucie River approximately 14 miles from the Atlantic Coast, where the Gulf Stream swings in close to the coast, creating Micro Climate Zones that tend to be warmer, than other areas of Florida, hence the name, “Treasure Coast”. From the St Lucie River you can head West to the Gulf of Mexico, through the locks, or East towards the Intercoastal which will take you North or South. Just past the barrier Islands which protect the Intercoastal is The Atlantic and The Bahamas are about 60 miles offshore. From this location, a short walk to downtown Historic Stuart Florida, it is a simple matter to get anywhere on the planet, via sea, or air.

The slip is equipped with metered electric, water, patio, washer/dryer, security, and is transferable to the new owner at $450 per month. That’s about half the going rate, if you can find one. Slips like this are like finding gold…… slips are getting extremly hard to find these days and are getting rarer each year, there is a long waiting list to get into anything decent. The County, ‘MS Poop’ boat comes by every Tuesday and will perform pump outs for free. You can safely leave a vessel here year round and not have to worry. Airports are nearby, allowing the ability to fly in and go cruise, come back and fly home.

Many vessels suffer from mold and mildew issues when they are stored for the Summer in the Tropics, which is the rainy season. Any leaks can translate into major other issues, structurally, as well feed the mold and mildew problems, below. Boat owners have to spend time cleaning their vessels with highly toxic cleaning products, before they can move back aboard. All this exposure has health risks. Who wants to sail off into Paradise aboard a Spore filled toxic yacht? Hopefully not you.

SV PaPa is a Green Vessel, no toxic chemicals are used for any reason for cleaning. All products used are natural, like vinegar. The Teak interior is hand rubbed Coconut Oil which is a natural anti fungal and helps inhibit mold mildew growth. There are no leaks and the bilge is bone dry, therefore no mold, no mildew will be found aboard SV PaPa. Chemically Sensitive people and those with Asthma seem not to have issues being aboard SV PaPa. This is because a great deal of attention has been paid to this facet of keeping this vessel as non toxic as possible. PaPa is well pass the off gassing stages that newer yachts produce as the various chemicals used in boat building, dissipate.

Step on board after PaPa has been stored in his slip all summer and you are greeted with a pleasant clean smell as you slide open the hatch for the first time in a long time. As you head below you notice that the air inside the vessel is not stale it all. It feels healthy, it feels good, it feels fresh, like right after a Thunderstorm. What is going on here? Technology verses chemicals……..I am able to do this through several different processes.

  1. De-humidification, keeping the interior dry is of part of equation.

  2. Ozone destroys mildew, mold, and spores.

  3. Ions makes particulate gather together becoming heavy and falling out of the air.

  4. HEPA filter removes small particles in the air.

I am an Engineer, Professional Firefighter and Disaster Managment Specialist under contract with various Government Agencies. I looked a long time for a vessel that was in great shape, well maintained, professionally upgraded and pretty much dialed in already. There has only been 3 owners of this vessel and I have owned it a little over a year. Previous owners were very meticulous as am I. We depend on our specialized emergency equipment to work properly 100% of the time as our lives depend on it, so it goes with my vessels. Considering all the possible problems that can happen offshore, a sound vessel is imperative to me.
