S/V Mariposa V is a Panama based 2005 Leopard 40 catamaran. Should you fly to Panama and buy our boat, we’ll defray the cost of travel up to $1000 USD, by deducting your expenses from the final purchase price. Fair enough?
Designed by Morrelli & Melvin built by Robertson & Caine, this model Leopard was voted catamaran of the year. It maximizes comfortable living space, storage, while ensuring safety, comfort, and good cruising speeds. Built in Cape Town, South Africa, the 40 features 4 spacious double cabins, with 2 heads and full, separately enclosed showers, plus two single berths in the forward bows.
This Leopard 40 is a fast boat and is easy to maneuver when single-handed. Her fine entry bows allow the Leopard 40 to tack under mainsail alone in less than 8 knots of wind. Her winches are ingeniously placed near the helm for easy handling.
The Galley is practical with large cabinets for storage and a countertop which facilitates the passage of dishes at the table in the cockpit. Dining accommodates eight people sitting comfortably, while leaving free access to the cockpit. The cockpit transitions to aft steps to the water.
These boats are light and fast. The ligher weight allows her to ride easily over waves and her sharp bows and clean underwater profile cut cleanly as well as minimize drag. Visibility is excellent over the coach roof and a sliding door in the hard cockpit bimini makes it easy to keep track of sail shape.
The 4 cabin, 2 head layout is perfect for a couple or a family of 4 to 6. Big enough to fit everyone, but not so huge as to be a handful for a small crew. Plus, she sails pretty quickly, and is particularly well set up to sail short-handed in all conditions. She has a modern, bright, galley-up design with panoramic views, Corian work surfaces and a very spacious saloon. A large bathing platform with direct access to the cockpit, complete electronics and fuel efficient 40 HP engines, giving great performance under power, as well as sail.
She is in great condition. A 2005 model and one of the last built. A rare model on the market. She has been lovingly cared for and well maintained and it shows very well.
Complete new bottom paint and hull polished, Sail drives inspected and all seals renewed in Aug 2018. New Genoa Jan 2019, new electronics 2017, and lots of cosmetic. All running rigging inspected and tuned Feb 2019. Mariposa V is ready to begin cruising any ocean with her new owner right now, and is currently located in Linton Bay Marina, Panama. We’re willing to discuss a delivery to US ports.Recent Maintenance and Upgrades:

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
