Here are some excerpts from Chis Caswells’s review of the Catalina 310 in Boats.com:

“The Catalina 310 is a surprisingly stiff boat. Part of that is due to the all-up weight of 10,300 or 10,700 pounds (depending on the keel), which is a ton or so more than her competitors. The flared topsides allow the boat some initial heel, and then she stiffens up and is a real pleasure to sail.

“With the spade rudder set far aft and the keel starting at the mast, she is sensitive without being twitchy, and the full-bodied shape keeps her tracking nicely both upwind and down.”

Four steps (thoughtfully angled for use while heeled) put you on a teak-and-holly sole amidst an unquestionably yachty interior. Rather than Catalina’s usual ash finish, the 310 has honey-toned teak bulkheads, ceilings and trim. With a complete inner liner that not only provides a glossy white finish but plenty of brightness as well, the 310 is nicely fitted together, with none of the heavy seams of silicone sealant that so many builders use to close awkward gaps. One of the trademarks of Catalina Yachts has always been superlative mold work, both in fit and glossy finish, and this is a fine example of that talent.

From Gerry Douglass, the Designer of Catalina Yachts…“The 310 really is a ‘drinks six, eats four and sleeps two’ boat,”

Manufacturer Provided Description

The Catalina 310 represents an an innovative approach to cruising boat design, as it incorporates the big boat features many couples desire in an easily handled, stable thirty-one-foot hull. The cockpit will comfortably day sail a group and has long seats for napping or sleeping under the stars. Cockpit lockers are numerous and large enough to hold all your cruising gear, including an inflatable.

The side decks are extra wide and secure for easy movement forward and aft. Sail controls and anchoring systems are well thought out for ease of handling. The accommodations are designed primarily for a couple, with a large owner’s cabin forward. A queen size centerline berth, innerspring mattress, and large bank of drawers will appeal to both captain and first mate. Lockers are both port and starboard.

Catalina owners have come to expect excellent light and ventilation, and the Catalina 310 is no exception. The main cabin is plushy upholstered with deep comfortable seating. Forward is a closeable opening in the bulkhead and built-in hardware to allow for TV viewing from either cabin. Also, there is a huge double berth aft for guests. The galley has everything for memorable meals aboard: a two-burner stove with oven, a top and front access refrigerator, deep stainless-steel sink, lots of handy storage, and an available microwave. The head has a separate shower compartment and plenty of storage; all through hulls and a “Y” valve to the holding tank are easily accessible. In fact, all systems are designed to enhance life aboard.

Special features include a twenty-gallon water heater, two 4D deep cycle batteries with an electronic battery charger, high quality fixtures, and easily accessible pumps, valves, and filters.

Catalina Yachts’ chief designer, Gerry Douglas, introduced the Catalina 310 in 1999 and well over three hundred hulls were built through 2008 when the design was discontinued. Unapologetically optimized for a couple, the 310 was a departure from other brands of this size as it didn’t make any promises it couldn’t keep – it’s a very functional boat for two. The construction of the 310 mirrored its predecessor, the thirty-two. The hull is solid fiberglass, the deck is cored with plywood and the cabin top with end-grain balsa. A grid-and-beam system and a liner were then installed. A shoal wing keel was an option and has a draft of 4’4”. A large spade rudder keeps her very maneuverable in tight spaces.

Calculations

Hull Speed
7.7 kn
Classic: 6.9 kn

Hull Speed

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Formula

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

7.67 knots
Classic formula: 6.9 knots
Sail Area/Displacement
16.7
16-20: good performance

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Formula

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3

  • SA: Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D: Displacement in pounds.
16.66
<16: under powered
16-20: good performance
>20: high performance
Ballast/Displacement
38.8
<40: less stiff, less powerful

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Formula

Ballast / Displacement * 100

38.83
<40: less stiff, less powerful
>40: stiffer, more powerful
Displacement/Length
246.8
200-275: moderate

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Formula

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
246.83
<100: ultralight
100-200: light
200-300: moderate
300-400: heavy
>400: very heavy
Comfort Ratio
21.9
20-30: coastal cruiser

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Formula

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
21.89
<20: lightweight racing boat
20-30: coastal cruiser
30-40: moderate bluewater cruising boat
40-50: heavy bluewater boat
>50: extremely heavy bluewater boat
Capsize Screening
2.1
>2.0: better suited for coastal cruising

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Formula

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
2.12
<2: better suited for ocean passages
>2: better suited for coastal cruising
