General condition and any additional information

1995 Morgan In-Mast Mainsail Sloop Listed on 4/14/2024, the Fish Migration, a 1995 45 Morgan, is ready for your cruising adventures! The Fish Migration can be inspected on land @ Safe Harbor Tower Marina - Douglas, MI. Here are Fish Migrations details and her Sellers comments: Fish Migration is 45-foot Morgan sloop center-cockpit, built by Catalina in Florida in 1995. She was a 2 owner boat before the current owners acquired her in November of 2021. Over the past 4 years, considerable time and effort refitting this worthy vessel to get her ready to sail down island and eventually to cross an ocean (should you so desire). The just refurbished in-mast main, 135% genoa, and hull design by Nelson/Marek, as well as her Morgan pedigree combine to make this boat not only a joy to sail, but an extremely comfortable home at sea. Her clean lines definitely catch the eye, and youll get many compliments on her look wherever you go. Stride down the open and navigable deck and youll notice that her standing and running rigging were both completely replaced in 2021 (work done by Annapolis Rigging.) The in-mast furling mainsail is easy to trim with all lines running to the cockpit, and the 135% genoa is a workhorse and will smoothly carry you to wherever you care to go. The 4 year new custom dodger and Bimini were designed and installed in 2020. The stainless steel dinghy davits system, outboard hoist, and solid lifelines were created and installed by KATO Marine. A brand new remote-controlled Maxwell windlass and capstan, oversized 65lb Mantus M1 anchor and 250ft of HT 5/8 chain rode to give you peace of mind were added in 2020. The Renogy solar system and 2020 batteries keep the boat powered when at anchor, and new LED lights throughout the boat reduce the power draw. The engine and generator, with very low hours for a boat of its age, have both been serviced and various hoses, water pumps, macerators, and bilge pumps have been replaced. Bonus: you can even have AC at anchor! Upon identification of a previous leak, nearly all opening and non-opening ports and all chain plates were removed and rebedded in spring of 2023. Note: the engine and generator finish was damaged due to an unnoticed water leak in the cockpit drains in 2020, leading to water dripping on the running engine. The leak was fixed immediately upon discovery of this issue - engine has run great since; the previous owner nor we have ever had a single issue with the operation of the engine. It runs and sounds great. Below youll find a wide open, yet cozy salon and u-shaped galley. Cooking is a blast with the sprawling counter space, 3-burner stove and double sink. The forward guest v-berth is spacious and is also accessible to the forward guest (wet) head. The luxurious aft master cabin has a queen island bed, vanity area but the biggest plus is the ensuite head with separate shower and tub! The entire boat fills with light from more than 30 port lights and hatches, allowing great air flow.. Copious amounts of storage can be found throughout the boat. The center cockpit is high and dry and the aft sundeck is a great additional gathering area.

Calculations

Hull Speed
9.0 kn
Classic: 7.97 kn

Hull Speed

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Formula

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

8.96 knots
Classic formula: 7.97 knots
Sail Area/Displacement
15.5
<16: under powered

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Formula

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3

  • SA: Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D: Displacement in pounds.
15.54
<16: under powered
16-20: good performance
>20: high performance
Ballast/Displacement
34.9
<40: less stiff, less powerful

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Formula

Ballast / Displacement * 100

34.89
<40: less stiff, less powerful
>40: stiffer, more powerful
Displacement/Length
237.8
200-275: moderate

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Formula

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
237.79
<100: ultralight
100-200: light
200-300: moderate
300-400: heavy
>400: very heavy
Comfort Ratio
30.0
20-30: coastal cruiser

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Formula

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
29.95
<20: lightweight racing boat
20-30: coastal cruiser
30-40: moderate bluewater cruising boat
40-50: heavy bluewater boat
>50: extremely heavy bluewater boat
Capsize Screening
1.9
<2.0: better suited for ocean passages

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Formula

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
1.88
<2: better suited for ocean passages
>2: better suited for coastal cruising
