Go to Sailing Texas classifieds for current sailboats for sale Herreshoff America 18, 1971 sailboat for sale Located Ocala FL

This is the former “Rum Tum Tugger,” well known in catboat circles under a former owner. After a few owners, she fell on hard times and deteriorated. She had two prior owners who were not able to restore her. I was looking for a small daysailer when she came along and I fell in love with her traditional lines, teak and bronze hardware. After a bit of work, she is not quite finished, but is now ready to go back in the water and sail while odds and ends are addressed. If you want a classic wooden boat look and feel without the maintenance this is the boat for you.

General

Hull#85 Built by Nowak and Williams. Original Bill of Sale says1973, but she’s titled as a ‘71. Spent most of her active life on the Great Lakes. LOA18’ 2” Beam 8’ Sail Area 250 sq ft Displacement2500 lb

Hull

No blisters, etc. Just waxed and buffed, nice gloss for her age. She has a factory modified keel, deeper aft with larger rudder to reduce her “hardmouthed” catboat behavior. Draft increased about 9” Steel centerboard with reel in cabin, control line led to cockpit. Decent bottom paint but probably needs recoated if kept afloat in saltwater. Wheel steering with heavy bronze Edson worm gear and teak wheel with Sunbrella cover. Well for outboard motor (not included). 6 HP usually recommended. Mounting forward of rudder gives good control under power. Cockpit floor is not well supported from factory, “bouncy” but structurally sound and not spongy Original oak rubrails rotted away. I replaced them with rubber. I started trying to make new oak rubrails, but it was too difficult. I have the white oak material to replace the wood if desired.

Rig

Flag Sail in good condition Extra sail as well in good condition Sailcover. All aluminum spars, just repainted to look like varnished spruce. Teak masthead revarnished. New gaff jaws, leathered New Sunbrella mast boot Tabernacle system fabricated, but I have been reluctant to cut the mast. Beautiful Lignum Vitae and bronze blocks. All running rigging included. Boom crutch.

Deck

Chocks on foredeck for Danforth Anchor. Bronze deckpipe, chocks and mooring cleats Bronze deadlights Opening bronze portlight forward Classic bronze deck hardware, even including small cleats for fenders. Port cockpit seat folds out for sleeping. Plastimo compass with inclinometer. Knotmeter-not sure it works, but repair service still available. Extensive Exterior Woodwork. Needs to be refinished, but it is not badly weathered.

Interior

Sleeps 2 adults on nice vinyl interior cushions. No mold/mildew problems in cabin. Classic brass Optimus swinging alcohol stove. Sink and faucet. I haven’t explored the fresh water system. Portapotty- new/clean. Large storage areas under bunks, freshly repainted. Carpet on cabin floor.

Plumbing/Electric

Bilge pump, manual Electrical system is spartan. Running lights, anchor light, 3 cabin lights, and knotmeter. Nav lights installed but not connected. Mast rewired. Battery box, but no battery.

Trailer

Single axle Shoreline trailer has surface rust, but is structurally sound. I believe it is the original trailer, although registered as a ‘99. Considerably thicker steel than common now, probably worth sandblasting and repainting someday. Bearing buddies with 2 new wheels/tires and spare. Lights worked when last used. Other Includes anchor rode, dock lines and life jackets Large notebook filled with extensive documentation.

Calculations

Hull Speed
6.7 kn
Classic: 5.65 kn

Hull Speed

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Formula

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

6.7 knots
Classic formula: 5.65 knots
Sail Area/Displacement
22.6
>20: high performance

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Formula

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3

  • SA: Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D: Displacement in pounds.
22.58
<16: under powered
16-20: good performance
>20: high performance
Ballast/Displacement
20.0
<40: less stiff, less powerful

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Formula

Ballast / Displacement * 100

20.02
<40: less stiff, less powerful
>40: stiffer, more powerful
Displacement/Length
199.6
100-200: light

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Formula

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
199.6
<100: ultralight
100-200: light
200-300: moderate
300-400: heavy
>400: very heavy
Comfort Ratio
13.4
<20: lightweight racing boat

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Formula

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
13.44
<20: lightweight racing boat
20-30: coastal cruiser
30-40: moderate bluewater cruising boat
40-50: heavy bluewater boat
>50: extremely heavy bluewater boat
Capsize Screening
2.4
>2.0: better suited for coastal cruising

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Formula

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
2.36
<2: better suited for ocean passages
>2: better suited for coastal cruising
