Acadian Lady is a 1992 Gozzard 36B, an elegant and seaworthy Canadian-built cruiser, now listed for $99,000 in Green Cove Springs, Florida. Designed by H.T. Gozzard and built by North Castle Marine, this 36-footer exemplifies the craftsmanship, versatility, and long-range comfort Gozzard yachts are known for. One of only four Gozzard 36s built with a hardtop, she is uniquely suited for liveaboard life or extended cruising.
Construction & Design With a fiberglass hull and a full displacement of 18,000 lbs, Acadian Lady combines strength with classic styling. She features a bowsprit, high bulwarks, teak cap rails, and a well-varnished exterior. The deck is wide and secure, while the cockpit is fully enclosed with a fiberglass dodger, hardtop, and isinglass panels (two of which should be replaced). Transom steps and a swim ladder enhance accessibility. The hull was buffed and waxed in 2024, and the teak brightwork topside is well maintained.
Interior & Accommodations Inside, the layout is warm and spacious, finished in American cherry with a teak and basswood sole. The innovative convertible salon transforms from a lounge to a private stateroom using pivoting settees and a folding bulkhead. Theres also a king-sized aft berth, full galley, and head with a separate shower. Other features include cedar-lined lockers, LED lighting throughout, butterfly hatches, new portlight screens, new cabin curtains, and a 24 LED Roku Smart TV. A Moen sprayer faucet and Seaward 11-gal water heater are included (not yet hooked up).
Equipment: Galley & Comfort The L-shaped galley includes a Force 10 3-burner propane stove/oven, top-loading Dometic CU 200 refrigerator/freezer (needs a new thermostat), stainless steel double sink, Fynspray hand pump, and ample cabinetry. One propane tank is installed with space for two. Newer additions include LED under-cabinet lighting and a complete dishware set.
Mechanical & Electrical Systems Powered by a Westerbeke 63B 4-cylinder diesel engine (64 hp, 1,708 hrs), the boat also boasts a new HBW 250 transmission (Sept 2024), a new water pump (July 2024), and a new transmission cooler (May 2024). The vessel features dual Racor fuel filters, a 3-blade MaxProp, and a Dometic 15K BTU reverse cycle A/C unit. Electrical highlights include a Bass AC/DC panel, Balmar high-output alternator, Group 27 and Group 31 batteries (starter new June 2024), multi-stage charger, and adapters for varying shore power inputs.
Rigging & Sails The cutter rig includes a North Sails fully battened main with three reefs, a topsail, and a staysailall maintained and restitched with UV shields. She features Schaefer furlers (new staysail furler in 2017), lazy jacks, a Strong Track mainsail system, and Lewmar/Barient winches. Control lines are led aft for ease of handling.
Electronics & Navigation Outfitted for confident navigation, Acadian Lady includes a Raymarine E95 hybrid touch MFD, radar (new 2023), EV-200 autopilot, wind/speed/depth instruments, VHF radios (new 2024), and a suite of radar reflectors.
Conclusion Acadian Lady offers a rare combination of traditional craftsmanship, intelligent design, and serious cruising capability at a compelling price. Ideal for a cruising couple, small family, or solo adventurer, shes ready to deliver both adventure and comfort afloat.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
LOA w/bowsprit: 42.0’
It is thought that at least 90 have been built.
