Seller's Description

This is a Florida based 2012 Lagoon L400 catamaran for sale by owner. This 2012 Lagoon L400 is designed and equipped for coastal sailing, ocean cruising and passage making. This owners version (3 cabins, 3 heads), can comfortably accommodate 6+2, elegantly fitted, with spacious interior and all equipment you can wish for. The Lagoon 400 is the largest of 40 foot catamarans available and has the space of a 60 foot monohull. The windows that wrap around the bridgedeck saloon are vertical rather than sloped-the signature Lagoon look-to better shade the interior and boost headroom over the settee and nav-station areas. Headroom in the boat is 7’ 0”!!

The owners hull stowage will comfortably meet your onboard needs. The master is an impressive suite rarely found on catamarans of this size, featuring double cabin, couch, and desk. She was one of the last Lagoon 400’s to be built benefiting from the nicer interior and later model standard equipment.

The saloon and galley are large enough for anyone’s needs. All of your kitchenware should easily in the dedicated galley space and the slide out pantry is great for food. Under the settee stowage is for long term foodstuffs so people can provision easily for 8 weeks or more. This boat has added the optional cockpit freezer, not fridge (so ok for alcoholic in the cockpit, but more so for cruising freezer food storage–essential. This particular lagoon 400 model has the heavy gauge wiring installed, which is appropriate for 110 volt conversion. All that needs to be added is the 110 volt inverter and 110 outlets wiring is already done, if someone wishes to add 110 to the 220. This would be quite a bonus as the boat can then be taken anywhere, as it can have 110 and 220 in that regard.

In the Galley is a Force 10 3-burner LPG Stove with separate oven. The vessel is equipped with a LPG (propane system). The system is equipped with two 10 lbs. bottle, fuel regulator, emergency shut-off valves and appropriate fuel lines and connections. The boat has both a Refrigerator and Freezer: Vitfrigo 12VDC air cooled reefer. Vitfrigo 12VDC air cooled freezer. There is also a Vitfrigo 12VDC air cooled cockpit freezer.

To run the boat, a dedicated steering and control station rests above and to port that can be effectively enclosed with zippered a zippered enclosure in foul weather. Helm station has engine throttle controls, engine control panels, compass, area for electronic equipment, leather covered steering wheel with brake, double helm seat with cushions, access steps from cockpit with s/s handrail, line storage bag. Steps to the station from the cockpit are flanked by all kinds of good grab bars. All halyards and sail-control lines lead to the helm station.

From stems to sterns, the Lagoon is about ease of use. Up front, large lockers flank a windlass and channel that directs chain to an anchor set to deploy on the bow. And once the boat’s anchored, a dinghy can slide up from aft, nest between the hulls, and disembark passengers on transoms that are cutaway inboard and provided with a sturdy handhold. When boarding from the dock, passengers can use the step set into each hulls’ exterior. The port and starboard transoms have aft swim platforms. The platform has a FRP deck. The port aft deck is fitted with single hinged swim ladder. There is also a port hot and cold transom shower.

Our boat is US Duty Paid and ready for her new owners to take immediate delivery. We have added a lot of recent cruising equipment, and she is cruise ready. We loved sailing through the Med and on across the Atlantic with the 2018 ARC! We were required to be safe in every aspect, for example, rigging inspection, lifeboat certification/inspection, new dan buoy, jackets, flares… We have finished our family sabbatical and now she is ready to move on to new adventures with the next owner/family!

The vessel is equipped with solar arrays. 1000 watts solar installed in 2018 and 800 ah AGM batteries installed in late 2018, connected to a Victron 702 battery monitor (installed in 2019) with bluetooth connection. There is a Full Cockpit Enclosure we installed in late 2018, and an additional 120 Liter freezer also added in 2018. We upgraded trampoline to a more comfortable model in 2019 and we had the Liferaft updated and recertified Nov 2018. Steering system: cable steering, s/s shaft rudders, emergency tiller. Much more in the boat inventory below.

She’s fully mantained and we live on her until she’s sold. Recent Maintenance and Upgrades:

Calculations

Hull Speed
9.9 kn
Classic: 8.21 kn

Hull Speed

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Formula

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

9.91 knots
Classic formula: 8.21 knots
Sail Area/Displacement
18.1
16-20: good performance

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Formula

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3

  • SA: Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D: Displacement in pounds.
18.11
<16: under powered
16-20: good performance
>20: high performance
Ballast/Displacement
?

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Formula

Ballast / Displacement * 100

?
<40: less stiff, less powerful
>40: stiffer, more powerful
Displacement/Length
189.7
100-200: light

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Formula

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
189.74
<100: ultralight
100-200: light
200-300: moderate
300-400: heavy
>400: very heavy
Comfort Ratio
13.3
<20: lightweight racing boat

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Formula

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
13.32
<20: lightweight racing boat
20-30: coastal cruiser
30-40: moderate bluewater cruising boat
40-50: heavy bluewater boat
>50: extremely heavy bluewater boat
Capsize Screening
3.4
>2.0: better suited for coastal cruising

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Formula

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
3.37
<2: better suited for ocean passages
>2: better suited for coastal cruising
