Seller's Description

The Boat: Red Fox is a 1985 model, and arguably one of C&Cs best designs. She is reasonably light, with a dry weight of 6,700 pounds. She is reasonably slim with a beam of 9 foot 4 inches. She is reasonably deep with a draft of 5 foot 3 inches. She sports a 43 foot mast. Red Fox is quick to accelerate, lively, and very responsive. She has a large rudder so she backs up well and turns on a dime. When you move the wheel, she moves. Its like driving a sports car vs a box truck. Dingy sailors who want to retain the responsiveness of a small boat will love sailing this boat.

The T shaped cockpit has one larger lazaret, and two smaller ones for fenders, dock lines, and propane tanks. A fold down table works great for dinner and games below. C&Cs have smoked plexiglass sliders on all the storage behind the settees. You can pack it full of food for a long cruise and nothing ever falls out.

The head is equipped with a Jabsco toilet, a solar vent, hot and cold running water, a foot pump, opening port, shower with shower sump, and covered towel/toiletry storage. The door closes two ways so you can expand the head space while using it.

She is equipped with a full toe rail, which makes hanging fenders a snap. She has shore power with a like new cable, standard outlet adapter, and a small inverter for running power tools and a portable icemaker. There are four opening ports, and a locker for rain gear and jackets. An automatic bilge pump is located in the deep bilge.

Engine/Drivetrain: Red Fox is equipped with a Yanmar 2GMF rated at 15 horsepower. This is plenty of power to drive the boat in heavy seas. Cruising range is approximately 300 miles per tank. She is equipped with a Drive Saver flexible shaft coupling and a PYI dripless stuffing box.

Equipment: Ground Tackle: Red Fox has a large anchor locker, and a very capable ground tackle system. The primary anchor is a 27 pound Kingston plow with 27 feet of chain and 250 feet of rode. The secondary anchor is a 13 point high strength Danforth with 27 feet of chain and 250 feet or rode. She also carries a 15 pound Dor Mor anchor sentinel. A custom Stainless Steel bow roller allows you to cruise with the plow in a quickly deployable position and aids in anchor retrieval. A deck mounted wash down pump outlet helps keeps the mud off the deck.

Electrical: Red Fox has been upgraded to LED running lights and LED interior lights. The interior lights are switchable to red for nighttime sailing. A small LED illuminates the cooler when the navigation lights are engaged. Deck lighting and forward facing spotlights are mounted on the spreaders. Two 2021 Nothstar Group 24 AGM batteries are included. It also includes a few 110 outlets, AC panel, and a shore power cord I have used once. The portable VHF has a permanently mounted charger. The West Marine stereo will play AM, FM, SD cards or pick up a signal from your blue tooth device. It has a line of sight remote and an RF remote so you can operate it from the water while floating. One set of speakers is indoors, and one is out in cockpit.

Instrumentation: Red Fox was upgraded in 2018 to a B&G Triton system. This is a NMEA 2000 system. It includes a touch screen GPS chart plotter at the helm and two switchable displays for wind, speed, and depth. The mast mounted wind vane is still in her box and will need to be installed, but the port in the NMEA backbone is installed. A fixed mount VHF and a new handheld portable VHF is included.

Calculations

Hull Speed
6.9 kn
Classic: 6.33 kn

Hull Speed

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Formula

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

A more accurate formula devised by Dave Gerr in The Propeller Handbook replaces the Speed/Length ratio constant of 1.34 with a calculation based on the Displacement/Length ratio.

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio.311
Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

6.86 knots
Classic formula: 6.33 knots
Sail Area/Displacement
17.8
16-20: good performance

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Formula

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64)2/3

  • SA: Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D: Displacement in pounds.
17.83
<16: under powered
16-20: good performance
>20: high performance
Ballast/Displacement
40.3
>40: stiffer, more powerful

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Formula

Ballast / Displacement * 100

40.31
<40: less stiff, less powerful
>40: stiffer, more powerful
Displacement/Length
268.2
200-300: moderate

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Formula

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
268.18
<100: ultralight
100-200: light
200-300: moderate
300-400: heavy
>400: very heavy
Comfort Ratio
21.4
20-30: coastal cruiser

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Formula

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam1.33)

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
21.44
<20: lightweight racing boat
20-30: coastal cruiser
30-40: moderate bluewater cruising boat
40-50: heavy bluewater boat
>50: extremely heavy bluewater boat
Capsize Screening
2.0
>2.0: better suited for coastal cruising

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Formula

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
2.0
<2: better suited for ocean passages
>2: better suited for coastal cruising

Notes

Shoal draft: 4.0’.
Entirely different design from the earlier C&C 29 (1977).
Built in US and Canada.
