Seller's Description

In 1969 Cheoy Lee shipyard built this Offshore 40, yard number 2248. She is an “E” plan configuration which gives her plenty of room below with V-berth forward, a head and convertible dinette to port, with the chart table and two single berths to starboard.

The owner indicates her first owner was the Cheoy Lee dealer in Marina Del Rey, California who used her as a demonstration boat for the dealership. Her second owner maintained the boat and made many improvements to her as his liveaboard. The Seller purchased her in 1979 and has owned her for over forty-one years. She is an outstanding example of the Phil Rhodes design, Offshore 40 class.

The forward head has been enlarged with the enclosure of the forward door and has two dry lockers immediately adjacent.

The galley is on the port side with four burner propane stove and ice box. The interior was refurbished in 2013.

The engine aboard is the Perkin 40 hp. She carries 30 gallons of fuel, and 85 gallons of water.

She has 5 sails in her inventory. Mains: North battenless roller reefing main and batten main with three reef points.

Head Sails: Genoa 150 (hanked on sail bag), Working and Storm head sails.

Spruce Spinnaker 14 Ft, Dico Aluminum Spinnaker 12-22 Ft with bridle.

The complete rebuild of the Perkins 104-7 engine was completed by S&W Diesel of Wilmington, CA in September 2023. The Borg Warner transmission has also been bench-tested with all external seals replaced by Tom Harpur of Chris Craft. All 2 1/2” wire-reinforced exhaust hoses have been replaced and the engine bay has been cleaned and refreshed. A full anti-siphon system has been added to the engine as well.

Notes

Also known as the EMPIRE 40 and a variant of the RHODES RELIANT 41, all from the same builder. The OFFSHORE/EMPIRE 40 was created in an effort to reduce costs of contruction and design royalties of the RHODES RELIANT. Although from the same basic tooling, the OFFSHORE 40 has iron instead of lead ballast, and differences in other construction details. Sold as a sloop or yawl.
In the mid 1970’s, Cheoy Lee Yard built another OFFSHORE 40 (variously designated as the OFFSHORE 4O MKII and then OFFSHORE 41), which was a different boat entirely and thought to be designed by Raymond Richards). See OFFSHORE 41.
(Variants of both the Rhodes and Richards design were at one time offered at one time or another under the names OFFSHORE 40 and OFFSHORE 41.)
